Mould and Core Innovations at GIFA 2007

COATINGS

The selection and application of mould and core coatings can significantly reduce the internal and external foundry costs associated with re-work and the scrapping of castings. The display highlights specific examples of Foseco’s innovative approach to “customised” product development by using new technologies. Highlights will be the launch of a superior coating range offering protection against casting defects associated with PUCB binder systems and products for flow coating applications to improve casting surface finish.

BINDERS

Foseco have recently extended their range of high-productivity and environmentally friendly core binders and are going to present their new generation of PUCB binder. These binders are friendlier to both people and the environment because they no longer contain any aromatic solvents. Due to their very high reactivity these binders can be hardened with very low volumes of amine catalyst.

The application of these new PUCB binders has proven successful in the production of complex cores for the highly demanding castings required by mechanical engineering and automotive end-users, in both the ferrous and non-ferrous sectors.

TOTAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE CORE SHOP

The production of high integrity and complex castings for the automotive industry not only requires modern binders, additives and coating but also the optimisation of the interaction between these products. Through the optimisation of these interactions, Foseco is able to exhibit automotive components that show superb surface finish and are free from sand expansion related defects.

The solution package consists of:

  • PUCB binders (POLITEC range) providing excellent strengths at reduced binder levels, resulting in reduced stress build-up within the binder bonds during thermal impact.
  • NORACEL additives to prevent veining. The additive modifies the hot bending properties and reduces the effect of the expansion of the silica sand dramatically.
  • Coatings belonging to the RHEOTEC family with superior insulating performance that slows down the heat transfer from the molten metal to the core sand.
